Solid 1″ thick stair treads, never veneered.

Product Description

Classic and simple, the natural wood grain shines through the 8070 Stair Treads. Choose from over 20 wood species, available in a variety of stains and finishes. Bullnose trim offers a smooth transition between steps and an elegant finish on returned edges. Traditional treads to preserve beauty and strength in your home.

Key Features

  • Bullnose Trim
  • Stain-grade
  • Multiple Sizing Options

Note, wood products may have varying amounts of staves due to the varying thicknesses of lumber that comes in each bunk and the width of the product.

Returned Edges

Any side of the 8070 Stair Treads that will not touch a wall is fitted with smooth bullnose trim. Returned Edges cover end grain, while also adding decorative flair. There are three configurations of returned edges available to cover the exposed edges of 8070 Stair Treads: Left, Right, and Double. NOTE: If both sides of the stair treads fit against a wall, you do not need returned edges.

To determine if a Left or Right Returned edge is required, stand at the bottom of the stairway and look up. If the right side is exposed, then you need a Right Returned Edge. If the left side is exposed, then you need a Left Returned Edge.

Double Return stair treads are needed when both edges of the tread are exposed. This style of tread requires a special measurement called the “throat cut”, which you will need to provide when you place your order. To find the throat cut of your Double Return tread, measure the length between the inside of the Left and Right Returned Edges.

With the exception of Double Returns, all Left, Right, and No Return Treads are sent to you with up to an extra 1” of material on the end with no return. This additional allowance may be trimmed on-site to match the exact curve of your unique wall, ensuring a snug fit.

Clear Finish & Stain Information

StairSupplies™ offers several premium stain and finish options for our products, depending on the product’s use. For Wood Stair Treads we offer both clear finishes and stains. Select a clear finish if you want to draw out the natural beauty and colors of the wood. If you prefer deeper, richer tones, our custom-mixed stains are the ideal choice for your Wood Stair Treads.

All tread materials and products that are used underfoot are finished with a Conversion Varnish. Strong and resilient, this varnish is standard in the hardwood flooring industry. Our team of experts apply this specialty product onto each stair tread using a spray applicator for even, flawless coverage to protect your treads against heavy wear and tear.

Wood Grain & Color Variation

At StairSupplies™ we believe that natural wood colors and visual textures add character to our products. With that in mind, we strive to match the grain and color of all of our wood products as closely as possible. However, due to the natural variation of wood products, there may be instances in which a perfect grain and color match is not possible. By ordering from StairSupplies™, you acknowledge that you are receiving a uniquely crafted product and there may be some variation in the grain and color of your wood products.

Are the Red oak treads solid or veneer?

All of our wood products are made of solid lumber, in your case Red Oak. In order to get the 11 1/4″ depth of our treads, we do edge glue them (but that is best practice to reduce warping).

do you install tread or riser first?

Most people install the riser first, and then butt the tread into the riser when installing.
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

What is the recommended installation technique if treads are ordered stained and finished w/conversion varnish. If nails or screws are used how are the holes patched?

You can order a finish touchup kit with matching stain & clear finish spray can. This is currently not available on our website, but can be ordered over the phone.

My stairs are 34” wide. Can I buy the 72” width and cut them to save money? I will be changing the color of my handrail and spindles as they are currently stained in an orange-ish color. I want dark treads with white risers. Can they be finished in place?

    Hi Kim,

You can purchase 72″ treads and cut them down as you see fit, but if you are concerned about grain pattern, your best bet would be ordering 34″ wide treads, as we can cut them to precise dimensions for you. Also, order your treads unfinished if you’re looking to stain them to match other wood parts on site. If you have additional questions, please give us a call at 1 (866) 226-6536.

I have some stair treads that need to be 42.5 inches long due to width variance of the stairwell walls. I see it says your treads come with up to 1 extra inch for trimming. Would I be guaranteed at least a half inch extra or should I go up a size?

    Bridgette, thanks for the question.

Only a few of our products continue to have extra length and treads are not one of them. I would recommend calling (866) 226 6536 and talking to one of our stair design experts (during regular business hours for the Eastern time zone) to make sure you get exactly the right product for your project.

is it possible to get longer lengths of the poplar stain grade without a finish in longer lengths? can we purchase an 8′ length? And, if so, can it still come via fed ex or ups?

    Thanks for the question Laura.

This would be a custom order, so you would have to call one of our specialists at (866) 226 6536. They will be able to help you out.

I am replacing just 1 foot of the stair tread on the right side as the rest of the tread is going to be covered by carpet. Can i order the double return tread and cut a piece of each end? Are both sides of the tread suitable for finishing. I am unclear on why you need to sell both a left and right return. Can’t the treads just be flipped over?

    Hi Aaron,

The reason we specify a left and right return, is that we usually pick one side of the tread as the top (using the side that looks most attractive). As for your specific situation, it would be best to call in and talk with one of our specialists.

    Thanks,
