Front Nosing
Replacement treads are crafted with a ½” thick body and a 1″ thick Front Nosing. This design gives the appearance of a thicker tread, while maintaining the appropriate tread thickness for compliance, safety, and ease of use.
Returned Edges
Any side of the 8073 Replacement Stair Treads that will not touch a wall is fitted with smooth bullnose trim. Returned Edges cover end grain, while also adding decorative flair. There are three configurations of returned edges available to cover the exposed edges of 8073 Replacement Stair Treads: Left, Right, and Double. NOTE: If both sides of the stair treads fit against a wall, you do not need returned edges.
To determine if a Left or Right Returned edge is required, stand at the bottom of the stairway and look up. If the right side is exposed, then you need a Right Returned Edge. If the left side is exposed, then you need a Left Returned Edge.
Double Return stair treads are needed when both edges of the tread are exposed. This style of tread requires a special measurement called the “throat cut”, which you will need to provide when you place your order. To find the throat cut of your Double Return tread, measure the length between the inside of the Left and Right Returned Edges.
With the exception of Double Returns, all Left, Right, and No Return Replacement Treads are sent to you with up to an extra 1” of material on the end with no return. This additional allowance may be trimmed on-site to match the exact curve of your unique wall, ensuring a snug fit.
Code Compliance
Replacement Treads are designed to slide on top of existing stair treads. A consistent rise from step to step is important for safety and most codes require treads stay within a ⅜” zone of uniformity. What is the difference between part numbers 8073 and 8074
The 8073 has a full 1″ bullnose, meaning that the front edge is rounded over completely (it makes a half circle).
The 8073 has a more modern or craftsman look with more square edges. All we do is add a 1/8″ roundover to the front edge, to knock down the corners so that they aren’t sharp.

what is the horizontal dimension of the nosing extension (how far does the edge of the nosing extend beyond the finished face of the riser)?

Those are markers for an internal code we use to help us identify each stain. We’re in the process of translating them into more identifiable marketing names. Please let us know if there’s anything else we can help you with.
Many other replacement stair treads are 3/4″ thick. With the body of your tread being only 1/2″ thick, do you ever have problems after installation with the tread breaking or cracking where the nosing begins and extends out the 1 1/4″, as that’s where most of the weight and pressure are on the tread while people are using the stairs.

Good question. We have not had this occur. As we utilize extremely strong glue joints and non-veneered treads, we are offering the strongest possible tread for that thickness. However, if you have concerns, I’d encourage you to check out the Janka Scale and select a hard wood to manufacture the replacement treads out of.
My staircase railing and balusters are connected to the actual stair which is currently covered with carpet.Any ideas on how I can install your wood treads and keep the railing intact?

Do you do installations?
Is your white oak from the south or the north? Northern white oak is a bit too brown to match our flooring which is Homerwood wire brushed white oak.
