Mounting System
To install your 4791 Painted Raised Panel Box Newel, you will need the Box Newel Mounting Kit. Follow our Installation Video to ensure a secure fit. The Box Newel may be installed either on the surface of the stair tread or beside the tread. Due to their precise edges, we have found that Box Newels look best on a square starting step.
Handrail Attachment
Join handrail to your 4791 Painted Raised Panel Box Newel using a rail bolt kit. Many configurations allow handrail to mount directly into the newel; however, if your handrail is joining with your box newel on a rake, you may also require a gooseneck handrail attachment.
Cap Attachment
The cap for this box newel is sent unattached to the newel body, allowing easy access for mounting handrail. Then, after handrails are attached, the cap can be secured on-site by applying a bit of wood glue and finishing nails for increased strength.
Splitting Box Newels
In order to maintain a consistent appearance when handrail must terminate into a wall, we offer Split Box Newels. Attach the partial newel to the wall, and your handrail can be secured like normal. If you would like your Painted Raised Panel Box Newel split in half, please select “Split in Half” in the drop-down menu above.

Is the box newel hollow inside and can it fit over a 4″ x 4″ post approx. 4′-0″
Both boxes are hollow, the bottom box has an opening around 4 3/4″ square, and the upper box has an opening around 3 1/4″. So you might be able to put it over a 3 1/4″ x 3 1/4″ post that is 4′ tall, but it would probably be a difficult fit. A 3″ post would be more likely to fit, but then it wouldn’t be as solid. I hope that answers your question.
