Product Description

6002 Handrail is 2 3/4″ at its widest point & 1 5/8″ at its tallest point. The 6002 is the perfect handrail to use with our cable rail system. It’s made of out one piece of wood (unlike our 6000 handrail which is 2 pieces of wood glued together to reach the necessary thickness).

We purchase 2″ thick lumber and plane it down to 1 5/8″ thick, so that you are getting a solid piece of wood without any glue joints. Our finish selection is currently made for interior use only.

The 6002 is available in Red Oak, White Oak, Hard Maple, Poplar, Walnut & American Cherry.

Wood Grain & Color Variation

At StairSuppliesTM we strive to match the grain and color of all of our wood products as closely as possible. However, due to the natural character of wood products, there may be instances in which a perfect grain and color match is not possible. By ordering from StairSuppliesTM, you acknowledge that there may be some variation in the grain and color of your wood products.

Exterior Handrail Option

Are the screws to attach the handrail included with the metal posts?

    Hi Catherine,
The screws are not included because you could have wood or metal handrail. You can purchase the screws you’re interested by clicking here.

can this be made with a 1.5 inch plow? I’m putting it on top of a metal railing that has a 1/4 inch thick by 1 1/2 wide top that needs to fit into the plow area.

We can definitely do that! Simply purchase the handrail with a 1 3/4″ plow, and then in the notes during checkout request a custom width plow.

    Can this come 13ft long?

    Hi Jennifer,
It depends on what wood species you’re interested in, and what our current lumber availability is. Normally 12ft is the longest, but there are occasions when we can get longer lumber (and therefore offer a 13 foot handrail).

What handrail species would stand up to weather naturally on a deck (exposed to rain & sun). Cypress, Teak, Ipe, or ?

    Hi RJ,

For 6002 Exterior Use, we’d recommend any of the following wood types: Ipe, White Oak, Western Red Cedar, Cypress, and Sapele. If you’re intending to have us finish the handrail, please mention that it is an exterior handrail in the customer notes so that we apply an exterior-grade finish. If you decide to go with our 6000 handrail, you’ll want to mention that it’s being used as an exterior handrail so that we use exterior grade glue on the joints. Please let us know if you have additional questions or concerns. You can comment here, or speak with a representative at 866-226-6536.

For long runs across outside decks, how do you recommend joining the ends to give a seamless look?

    Guest

    Wes,

We typically recommend utilizing a scarf joint as it is an extremely strong handrail joint. This is because it offers a large surface area to join the two pieces of handrail, which also serves to provide as seamless a look as possible. For more information, please read our blog on scarf joints.

Is it possible to mount your handrail to a wall?

    AJ,

Yes! I would recommend using our Stainless Steel Wall Mounted Handrail Bracket in order to accomplish this.

I need (2) pieces of 12′ White Oak w/scarf joint. How do I confirm availability of 12′ lengths as there is no option to select 12′ in the 6002 Solid Handrail length drop-down?

    Guest

    David,

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, we do not offer lengths greater than 10′ in the 6002 profile. This is due to the limited lumber availability to create a solid wood handrail.

Let us know if you need anything else.

If I order red oak, can I use a Jacobean stain on it to match my floors?

    Guest
    StairSupplies
    6 years 6 months ago

    Hi Angie,

If you’re looking to do an on-site stain match, you can order any of our wood stair parts unfinished. While we can’t ensure that a given stain will match the stain on your floors, Red Oak tends to receive very well, which makes it a great stain matching option.

Are these quarter sawn or plain sawn?

    Guest
    StairSupplies

    Kathryn, thanks for the question.

It depends on the wood species. The only species we currently carry that is quarter sawn, is the white oak. All other wood species are plain sawn.

Is it possible to order this with a 2″ wide plow? I am attaching to a solid steel flat bar top piece that is a full 2″ in width and I’d rather have it made with the right size plow than have to modify it with a router in the field. Thank you!

    Thanks for the question Ethan,

Unfortunately this is an area where we are limited by our tooling so we aren’t able to do a 2″ plow.

    Hi Laura,

Unfortunately, we do not offer the 6002 Solid Handrail in a Paint Grade option. However, we do offer our 6000 Handrail in Paint Grade, which is the same style of handrail.

    Thanks,

To be clear, I see that 6002 does not come with a primer finish option BUT can the poplar, no finish option, be primed and painted on site?
