Rounded End
Each side of the 8650 Starting Step that does not attach to a wall requires a decorative Rounded End to accommodate a newel. There are three configurations available: Left, Right, and Double. NOTE: If both sides of the stair treads fit against a wall, you do not need this style of starting step.
To determine if a Left or Right Rounded End is required, stand at the bottom of the stairway and look up. If the right side is exposed, then you need a Right Rounded End. If the left side is exposed, then you need a Left Rounded End.
Double Rounded End starting steps are needed when both sides of the starting step are exposed. This style requires a special measurement called the “throat cut”, which you will need to provide when you place your order. To find the throat cut, measure the length between the inside of the Left and Right Rounded End. Each Rounded End adds 10 ⅜” per side.
Additional Style Options

Note, wood products may have varying amounts of staves due to the varying thicknesses of lumber that comes in each bunk and the width of the product.

Do you have line drawings of your starting stairs?
Unfortunately, at this time we don’t have any drawings of this part. If there is a specific dimension that you’re curious about please let me know.
Whats the overall length for the 42″ version of this product?
Hi Sean,
The 42″ measurement refers to the throat cut of this product – the width between the returns. Each rounded return adds 10-3/8″ of overall width. So for a left- or right-return 8650 starting step at 42″, the overall width would be 52-3/8″. Or, for a double return, you’d be looking at 62-3/4″ of overall width. Should you have any additional questions, please give our team a call at 1 (866) 226-6536.

Is this overall width the width at floor level (width of the riser), or the width of the tread?
Thanks for the question Jessica.
The width you order (i.e. 36″) is the width of the throat cut (which is the cutout you see in the photo). The returns then have a diameter of 17 1/2″ so if you add the width of the throat cut to 17 1/2″ for a single return or 34″ if you have a double return, you should get the overall width at the top.
